When you read some social reformer's report of how they (often she) found some squalid family, you will often see the word 'naked' applied- this does *not* necessarily mean that anyone was seriously nude as we would consider it- instead it would mean that they were in a shirt, shift, etc- which to the eyes of a Victorian- especially a middle class Victorian woman- was 'naked'. <br /><br />Moral of the story- putting on a shirt does not make you dressed anymore than boxers would today.
